Astrology – Aleister Crowley

Aleister Crowley, one of the most prominent occultists of this Century, has produced a work on Astrology unlike any of its predecessors, for it explains Astrology within the context of the mythology and mysteries of the West. For Crowley, the Signs and Planets are not more cyphers in a mathematical calculation, but living archetypes which have developed along with the men who conceived them.

From the text, written in 1915, it can be seen that Crowley not only knew his Astrology in the conventional sense, but he also understood the deeper implications and symbolism of Astrology. Modern Astrologers in their attempts to make an exact science, have tended to discard the accretions of myth and fable which attend the Constellations, the Planets and their associated Gods. Crowley has restored these myths, along with a host of similar symbolic systems, such as the Tarot and alchemy, providing the fertile soil which nourished the bare bones of mathematical astrology. He thus brings to the work an approach which evokes the forces under consideration rather than merely listing their attributes.

Appended are two exhaustive studies of Neptune, Uranus and their aspects to the other planets, and influence in each of the twelve house. Stephen Skinner has provided footnotes elucidating some of the more obscure references in the text, especially where Crowley touches upon some of the less commonly known aspects of the Tarot Atus.
